EDINBURG — Day 2 of the inaugural Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s Louie Alamia Baseball Tournament went on as scheduled as teams from across the Rio Grande Valley played what could be their final games for the foreseeable future.
Highlighting the second day tournament slate was a matchup featuring two of the RGV’s top programs — the Edinburg Vela SaberCats and Sharyland High Rattlers.
While the SaberCats had home field advantage, that mattered none to Sharyland High senior Martin Vazquez as the first baseman made himself feel right at home.
The Rattlers reached base during the first inning, setting up Vazquez, Sharyland’s cleanup hitter, to blast a grand slam over the left-field fence for an early 4-0 lead.
Vazquez drove in another run during the top half of the second, then proceeded to homer a second time during the fourth inning with a 3-run shot to center field, which gave his Rattlers an 11-0 win over the SaberCats in four innings.
Vazquez finished 3 for 3 with eight RBIs, two home runs, one grand slam and two runs scored.
Sharyland’s Randy Garcia, Saul Soto and Victor Sanchez drove in the Rattlers’ other three runs. Sanchez started, pitching four innings and allowed five hits, zero earned runs and two walks while striking out six batters for the win... Click here to read full article
