The Sharyland Rattlers had a tough night keeping the Mustangs of McAllen Memorial corralled in their 51-10 loss at Richard Thompson Stadium Friday night.
The Mustangs scored on the game’s opening drive and then forced a Rattler turnover on Sharyland’s second play from scrimmage to get the ball back. Memorial scored nine plays later to put the Rattlers in an early 14-0 hole.
Sharyland responded with a 65 yard drive that included a 38 yard pass from Benjamin Valdivia to Kevin Chavez and ended with a 28 yard field goal from Kali Nguma to make it 14-3.
Things quickly got out of hand after that.
Memorial answered the Rattler’s score with a four play touchdown drive, recorded a safety on the ensuing kick return and scored again two plays later to push their lead to 30-3.
Sharyland moved the ball into Mustang territory on their next possession. A 28 yard pass from Valdivia to Chavez and a personal foul penalty on Memorial set up the Rattlers inside the Mustangs 30 yard line but went no further. A Sebastian Hinojosa interception gave the Rattlers the ball back in Mustang territory two plays later but the offense couldn’t capitalize.
The third quarter was all Memorial as they scored on their first three possessions to push their lead to 51-3. The Mustangs defense did their part too, forcing two three and outs to start the second half and picking off a pass on the Rattlers third possession.
The Rattlers offense finally reached the end zone late in the game. A long run from Manuel Cantu set up Robert Mancha’s three yard touchdown to make in 51-10.
In the end the Rattlers just couldn’t find a way to slow the vaunted rushing attack of the Mustangs. Campbell Speights led the way for Memorial, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns.
Sharyland coach Ron Adame credited much of the outcome to Memorial. “That’s a good football team,” he said. “They got it done offensively, defensively and (with) special teams. But we didn’t play our best football.”
Adame went on to say how moving on from the loss was the next step for his team.
“Right now we just have to evaluate where we’re at and what we did wrong and try to fix those things we didn’t do right. So we bounce back. That’s what we’re looking to do. That’s what true winners will do. They’ll bounce back after a defeat like this.”
