MISSION — After dropping two consecutive games in District 31-5A play, the PSJA Memorial Wolverines were looking to bounce back Friday night against Sharyland High.

Chris Sierra gave the Wolverines their bounce.

The senior forward went scorched earth on the Rattlers during the third quarter as Sierra scored 12 of his game-high 22 points to push PSJA Memorial past Sharyland High 65-42 at Sharyland High School.

“Chris is one of the best players when he gets it going. He’s been in a little bit of a funk, we’ve been after him, but we tell him to just shoot the ball,” PSJA Memorial head coach Eric Steinbrunner said. “He’s one of the best shooters in the Valley and he got it going tonight.”

Sierra’s 17 second-half points sparked the Wolverines as PSJA Memorial outscored the Rattlers 42-16 during the third and fourth quarters. Sierra also added four assists and four rebounds.

“It was great. They (teammates) were just giving me the ball and I was just making my shots — without them I wouldn’t have been hitting my shots,” Sierra said. “Their driving and penetration left me open and I just hit my shots.”

Senior point guard Jonathan Martinez, who scored 10 points for the Wolverines and assisted Sierra on a couple of his 3-pointers, said he was proud to see his friend step up and help put PSJA Memorial back on the right track.

“I love seeing that. I love seeing my boys playing the way they should be playing. We had a tough couple games, but he’s back, my friend’s back,” Martinez said.

Sierra had open looks during the first half, but just converted one from deep as he scored five before heading into the break. When he came out of the locker room for the third quarter, he started feeling it.

“You have to have a shooter’s mentality,” Steinbrunner said. “You’re not going to hit every shot, you’ve got to keep shooting, and sooner or later, it’s going to start to fall, and once it starts to fall, that rim is going to become real big and it did for him.”

Sharyland High’s Naz Moore did his best to keep pace with PSJA Memorial as he went off for 15 during the opening half. The Wolverines defense put on the clamps during the third and fourth as Moore scored just five more points to finish with a team-high 20 points for the Rattlers. Alex Alvarez also had 14 for Sharyland.

Nick Cisneros, Oscar Marquina and Jose Lozano each finished with nine pointsfor the Wolverines.

The victory sends PSJA Memorial to 3-2 in District 31-5A action and 17-10 for the season.

“That was a big win for us,” Steinbrunner said. “We needed this one.”

Next up for the Wolverines is a home game against Roma slated for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
