Briana Silerio became the first golfer from La Joya Palmview to advance to the UIL state golf tournament, while Sharyland High finished second as a team after a sudden-death playoff in the Region IV-5A golf tournament Tuesday at Palm View Golf Course in McAllen.

Alamo Heights and Sharyland each shot a two-day total 651 to tie for first place .Alamo Heights won on the second sudden-death playoff hole to capture the regional title, while Sharyland took second and the Boerne Champion Navy team captured third. All three teams will head to White Wing Golf Course in Georgetown for the two-day state tournament, beginning May 13.

Silerio shot a two-day 159 (78, 81) to claim the second state qualifier position. The top three teams advance to the state tournament, along with the top three individuals not on those teams.

“I’m on Cloud Nine,” La Joya Palmview coach Tony Ocana III said. She really worked hard and she will be playing at next level at Texas A&M because of that hard work.”

O’Cana has been the head coach at Palmview since the program’s inception 11 years ago. Silerio told him, as a freshman, that she was going to take him to state.

“I’m lost for words and just so proud of her,” said O’Cana, who first started working with Silerio when she was 8 years old in a summer golf league. “We knew she had a chance. She has been a work in progress and she told me she would be going to state and taking me with her — and we are. She is something else.”

Carolina Cantu led the way for the Rattlers with a 157 (79, 78) total followed by Samira Salinas’s 158 (84, 74), Paulina Flores’ 159 (78, 81), Gabriela Osuna’s 177 (92, 85) and Maialen Erena’s 184 (94, 90).

“They did great,” second-year coach Ashley Garza said. “Everyone did what they needed to do. In the end, it was a mixed set of feelings, but this morning (Tuesday) we started in second place and the only thing they had to do was play their game. They just fell one hole short.”

It will be the seventh straight state golf appearance for Sharyland. The Rattlers finished a school-best second last year.

Garza said that with just two returners back from last year’s team, she’s counting on those seniors (Cantu and Flores) to show the others how it works and to help keep them calm.

“There will be a lot of emotions, but if they can play to their potential, we can come in the top half,” said Garza, whose team won regionals last year. “That’s what we’re looking to do, and I think this group can do that.”

In the Region IV-6A golf tournament at The Republic Golf Course in San Antonio, Austin Westlake Red shot a team-best 580 to capture the regional title by 33 strokes over Austin Westlake Blue.

Mission High’s Mia Lerma had the best day for the RGV golfers, finishing tied for 12th, carding a two-day total of 152 (75, 77), while Edinburg High’s Madi Ozuna shot a 158 (74, 84) to finish tied for 21st. Austin Westlake Red’s Sadie Engleman shot a 141 (72, 69) to win the individual medalist honors.
